15 projects get Planning Challenge grants

PROVIDENCE – The state has awarded $1 million in grants to 15 local and regional planning projects under the Rhode Island Statewide Planning Program’s Planning Challenge Grant Program, Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee’s office announced.

The grant winners were chosen out of 33 applications totaling $2.3 million in requests.

The grant winners are:

  • $50,000 for Exeter to create a Web-based application for GIS deployment.

  • $100,000 to Grow Smart Rhode Island to continue the award-winning Grow Smart Rhode Island Land Use Training Collaborative.

  • $53,800 for Johnston to create and maintain an updated parcel-based database, and to make the information available on their website.

  • $58,000 for Newport to complete a re-use plan for the area in and around the Newport Pell Bridge Ramp, Connell Highway Interchange and Navy Hospital property.

  • $50,000 for the Olneyville Housing Corp. to analyze and outline a new circulation pattern through and around Olneyville Square.

  • $100,000 for Pawtucket to develop a real estate development strategy with Central Falls for the downtown and Blackstone River corridor.

  • $36,000 for Providence to design a new city bicycle plan.

  • $43,000 for the Providence Plan to launch the Rhode Island Community Profile website.

  • $100,000 for the R.I. Department of Environmental Management to assess village development in Rhode Island.

  • $32,500 for Smithfield to update the town's Comprehensive Community Plan.

  • $52,770 for Tiverton to implement form-based zoning and transform the Main Road into a Main Street.

  • $100,000 for the University of Rhode Island's Coastal Resources Center and Sea Grant to address climate change in relation to transportation and land use.

  • $30,000 for Warren to investigate power line easements for a more formal walking and biking trail between the town and Bristol.

  • $100,000 for Warwick to create a design manual with standards for the Warwick Station District development.

  • $100,000 for Woonsocket to create a Main Street Livability Plan.
