$1.5M in scholarships available through Rhode Island Foundation

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Foundation is promoting the availability of $1.5 million in scholarships, with the first deadlines cropping up April 8.
Dozens of individual, family and organizational donors have established scholarship funds at the foundation to help students defray educational expenses such as tuition, room and board, fees and books. In addition to general assistance, some funds that provide scholarships target single mothers, nursing students, students of color and residents of specific towns.
“Each of these scholarships turns dreams into reality for our donors and the recipients,” said Neil Steinberg, the foundation’s president and CEO. “The effect of their generosity will ripple through our community for generations.”
The announcement comes at a time when many students are receiving financial aid awards for post-secondary education and need help financing their education, said foundation spokesman Chris Barnett.
The foundation also offers a number of awards targeting students studying everything from social work or the arts to textile technology or filmmaking. For instance, the Albert and Florence Newton, Edward and Virginia Routhier, and Willard and Marjorie Scheibe scholarship funds target students studying nursing.

“My scholarship has helped tremendously towards funding my college education. I am working very hard so that one day I can give back and so I can use my nursing skills in Rhode Island,” said Lauren Farrell of Barrington, a nursing major at Northeastern University. Farrell won an Edward and Virginia Routhier scholarship for $2,100
