20 R.I. restaurants win awards for superior wine selection

NEW YORK – Twenty Rhode Island restaurants are among 3,618 listed worldwide for their superior wine lists, according to the advanced release of the Aug. 31 issue of Wine Spectator.
The Wine Spectator Restaurant Awards Program has honored the world’s best wine programs since 1981.
Grand Award winners – this year there are eight – offer 1,000 or more selections, with superior breadth and depth in many of the world’s classic wine-producing regions, according to the publication.
This year, restaurants from 50 states and more than 75 other countries and territories earned an award.
Of these, 2,563 earned the Award of Excellence, which recognizes a wine list of about 90 or more quality wine selections paired with cuisine. Another 973 earned the Best of Award of Excellence for offering a wine list of typically 350 or more selections with “vintage depth or superior breadth” in one or more major wine regions, the magazine states.
Featured with a two-glass insignia that represents the “Best of” awards are:

  • 22 Bowen’s Bar & Grille, Castle Hill Inn and the Mooring Seafood Kitchen and Bar in Newport
  • Jamestown Fish in Jamestown
  • Seasons in Westerly
  • the Atlantic Inn on Block Island.

Fourteen local restaurants are featured with the one-glass insignia representing the Award of Excellence. They are:

  • Brick Alley Pub, Spiced Pear Restaurant and the White Horse Tavern in Newport
  • Olympia’s Tea Room in Westerly
  • Caffé Itri and Chapel Grille in Cranston
  • Trio and the Coast Guard House Restaurant in Narragansett
  • D Carlo Tuscan Grille and Wine Bar in Smithfield

Also, in Providence:

  • The Capital Grille, Camille’s, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar, Hemenway’s Seafood Grill and Oyster Bar, and Mill’s Tavern Restaurant.

In addition, the magazine listed eight grand award winners joining the top tier of restaurants. Those include: Aux Beaux Arts in Macao, China; Bleu Provence in Naples, Fla.; Capo in Santa Monica, Calif.; Marcello’s La Sirena in West Palm Beach, Fla.; Pearl & Ash in New York City; Plumed Horse in Saratoga, Calif.; Print Hall in Perth, Australia, and Spruce in San Francisco.
“Hailing from all 50 states and more than 75 countries, these establishments stand at the forefront of wine-and-food culture, offering extraordinary experiences for enophiles across the globe,” the magazine states.
