Pensions. Talk about a hot topic. But while public-employee pensions are getting the headlines of late thanks to years of underfunding, generous benefits and unrealistic investment-return expectations, there are thousands of other retirement plans, public and private, that have been well-managed and are solvent. And Anthony Mangiarelli is one of the reasons for that.
The 34-year-old, senior manager for accounting and auditing at Kahn, Litwin, Renza & Co. Ltd. is a “key leader” of the firm’s Employee Benefit Plan Niche, he reported in his 40 Under Forty application.
Last year that piece of KLR’s business grew about 30 percent, and with about 80 plans on its client list, it is in an elite group of accountancies nationwide, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, which estimates that 115 firms audit more than 50 retirement plans annually.
Playing off those engagements, Mangiarelli has made presentations to clients and prospective clients, as well as staff members, about how 403(b) plans – a key piece of the total pay packages at nonprofits – are changing, and what that means for them.
It’s not a surprise that the Bryant University alumnus has interest and expertise in helping small clients, whether in the nonprofit world or those that are family-owned. He worked for years at the family business and learned that hard work and perseverance pay off.
In addition to a full plate at KLR, Mangiarelli serves as a steering-committee member for the United Way of Rhode Island’s Young Leaders Circle. He also has given his time to allow Bryant University students to shadow him.
Sounds like he is helping build a better future, just like he is doing at work. •
