When lawyers at Hinckley Allen & Snyder LLP have a question about taxes, they turn to attorney Katie A. Ahern.

Ahern, 29, supports the firm’s 130 or so lawyers on all matters of taxation from the local to the federal level. She keeps her colleagues abreast of the latest changes in tax codes, publishes articles and presents to clients and groups.

“Katie is one of our best and brightest up-and-coming lawyers,” said co-worker Marc Crisafulli. “Among her many strengths is her drive to succeed – she is always working to improve herself and to make strong contributions to the firm’s partners and clients.”

Having a drive to succeed may be putting it mildly. Even at Westerly High School, Ahern stood out, becoming Student Council president and organizing a talent show.

Encouraged by her grandmother, Ahern became the first of her family to graduate college, earning an accounting degree from the University of Rhode Island in 2004. She shined, too. She made Dean’s List, became a resident assistant, served on an advisory committee for the dean of the College of Business Administration and earned memberships in honor societies.

In 2007, she earned her law degree from Roger Williams University. Three years later, she earned a master’s of laws with a taxation specialty from Boston University.

The degrees provide Ahern a unique collection of knowledge that allows her to take complicated tax jargon and explain it in plain language. And armed with her schooling, she has mentored law students and taken on pro bono work through a collaborative at the RWU School of Law. She also teaches law to undergraduate and MBA students at the University of Rhode Island.

She also serves on the Governance Committee of the Genesis Center and on the board of the Rhode Island Women’s Bar Association. •
