Katy Hynes’ path through life has always been clear, her goals focused and commitment unwavering.

When she was a young girl, she decided she wanted to be an attorney. And not just any attorney; she wanted to be the best she could be and continues on that unwavering course today.

“I have dedicated my life to the profession of law,” she wrote in her 40 Under Forty application.

She was valedictorian of her 2002 graduating class at Roger Williams University School of Law. It’s an impressive achievement under any circumstance made even more so in her case by having attended law school at night after working full time during the day.

While attending law school she worked as director of court-advocacy services for Sojourner House in Providence. She supervised services provided to victims of domestic abuse. For five months in 2000, she also served as interim executive director.

She joined Adler Pollock & Sheehan in 2003. As a senior litigation associate, she has focused her practice on criminal law, animal law, products liability, toxic tort and business litigation.

Along the way she has successfully defended corporate clients against white-collar criminal charges and represented academic institutions in civil matters.

Still, her desire to serve the “most powerless members of our society” has led her to provide as much pro bono services as possible through the Volunteer Lawyer Program.

And remembering what she learned at Sojourner House, the 38-year-old Hynes always reserves time to assist victims of domestic violence. •
