Matthew R. Plain does not even think twice about helping others.

“It’s something that has been a part of me since as long ago as I can remember,” said the associate with Taylor Duane Barton and Gilman LLP.

Plain finds he does not need special times set aside for helping others. Regardless of the other challenges he faces, he always feels the need “to give some back. … I’ve been given so much.”

Plain, 35, has worked as a public school teacher and athletic coach in North Carolina, as a law clerk to Chief Judge George E. Healy Jr. of the R.I. Workers Compensation Court and as a member of the Chief Judge’s Uninsured Employers Task Force, established after the 2003 Station nightclub fire to address situations when employees are injured working for uninsured employers.

At Taylor Duane since 2006, he has helped revise state law governing special education and is one of the primary authors of the state’s charter public schools act.

In 2008, he designed, implemented and now manages the law firm’s first formal pro bono program and serves on the state Advisory Board for the Pro Bono Collaborative. He has been a member of the board of directors of The Manton Avenue Project since 2006 and regularly volunteers at the San Miguel School in Providence, an independent middle school for urban boys. He has been a mentor in Providence’s Year Up program, has co-founded the Avenger Football Alumni association at East Greenwich High School, served on a school system hiring subcommittee for coaches and, in addition to moonlighting as a real estate broker, runs marathons, recently completing his second, the Cox Sports Marathon in Providence. •
