Noah Benedict, 37, is the chief operating officer of Polaris Medical Management Inc. and the Rhode Island Primary Care Physicians Corp., the largest independent-practice association in the state representing 165 primary care physicians.

Since 2002, he has played a lead role in promoting the use of e-prescribing technology, a field where Rhode Island has been what Benedict called “a trailblazer.”

The University of Rhode Island graduate reached a new plateau in 2011 when Polaris designed a new clinical product intended for all primary care physicians nationwide. Completed in January, the new EpiChart version 6.0 received national certification in February.

After joining the Primary Care Physicians Corp. and Polaris in 2001, Benedict in 2002 launched what was then the largest integration of e-prescribing technology in the state, working with 62 primary care physicians’ offices. From 2003 to 2005, he and the Polaris team developed EpiChart, clinical software made to meet the specific needs of a primary care office.

But the status quo is never enough for Benedict.

Soon after, he and his team rewrote the electronic health records application. Nationally certified in 2007, Epi-Chart 5.2 is “a more robust and reliable product” because it includes “pioneering clinical functionality,” Benedict said.

Today, Polaris has enrolled more than one-fifth of the primary care physicians in the state in the EHR program.

In 2010, Benedict was one of the chief architects of the Patient Centered Medical Home model, established in a groundbreaking contract between the physicians’ group and Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island. •
