At Custom Computer Specialists, the workplace philosophy is that everyone matters. If the company is to be successful, every single employee must contribute. To do this, an entrepreneurial spirit is fostered throughout the organization, encouraging employees to treat the business as their own – and to share in success.

When the consulting and technology group achieved a superior performance rating, exceeding goals in customer satisfaction, it was rewarded with a special celebration: a visit to an indoor go-cart racing facility in Boston.

It’s part of a larger recognition program to reward and acknowledge the good work of employees. Custom believes that managers should acknowledge a job well-done, in front of as many people as possible. A “leadership game ball” – an actual regulation NFL football – is awarded twice a month to staff members who have demonstrated superior leadership. Winners sign the ball and display it at their desk. At year’s end, winners are entered into a drawing to have a chance to win an all-expenses-paid trip to the Super Bowl.

“We’re often supporting our clients’ computer networks, and sometimes problems happen late at night, or on the weekend,” said Michael Davis, vice president of marketing. “We need to work very well together as a team.”

To further motivate and reward employees, Custom offers a “service, training and rewards” program, receiving points for completion of certification programs, redeemable with electronic gift cards from $25 to $1,000. “We thrive on technical competency,” Davis said.

Team-building is an important part of Custom’s philosophy. It hosts a regular “video game night,” with employees bringing in games. •
