5 given When Work Works awards

Five Rhode Island businesses, including several from the financial services sector, were recently honored with the 2014 When Work Works Award by the Families and Work Institute and the Society of Human Resource Management.
According to a news release, the five businesses honored were:

  • Healthcentric Advisors
  • Kahn, Litwin, Renza & Co. Ltd.
  • KMPG LLP
  • Ryan LLC
  • Sansiveri, Kimball & Co. LPP

To receive the award, businesses must undergo a two-step evaluation process that encompasses six research-based ideals to achieve a productive (and supportive) workplace:

  • A culture of trust
  • Autonomy
  • Opportunities for learning
  • Satisfaction with earnings, benefits and opportunities for advancement
  • Supervisor support for work success
  • Work-life fit

During the first round of evaluations, employers must complete an application that assesses flexibility programs and practices (for organizations with several locations, they can be submitted in separate applications to be judged separately). The applications are then measured against a nationally representative sample of employers, provided by the FWI National Study of Employers. Finalists of the first round must rank in top 20 percent of employers in the U.S.
The second round has employees to fill out a confidential survey that focuses on the employee’s experience with flexibility and supportiveness in the workplace. All employees will be surveyed for organizations with less than 250 employees, but for larger companies requires a 40 percent response rate.
The confidential employee survey accounts for two thirds of the employer’s score.
There is no limit to the amount of recipients that can receive the award. Eligible businesses must have a minimum of 10 employees and must have operated in the U.S. for at least one year. Applicants can also receive a free benchmarking report to see where they stand against other award winners, as well as a nationally representative sample of employers.
Last year’s honorees from Rhode Island were Kahn, Litwin, Renza & Co., Ltd., Rhode Island Housing, Ryan LLC and Sansiveri Kimball & Co. LPP.
The When Work Works Awards are a part of a national project to provide research and education for the business community about workplace flexibility programs and best practices. The awards program was founded in 2005.
