50 families attend Little Heart Hero Day

WARWICK – More than 50 families affected by congenital heart defects attended the American Heart Association’s fifth Little Heart Hero Day at Goddard Memorial State Park on Sept. 13.
The day is the association’s celebration for survivors, who dress in red “heart hero” capes, and their siblings. Getting beyond the medical setting, children and their families participated in a variety of activities, including “touch a truck” fire trucks, princess time with Snow White and Queen Elsa, face painting, soccer, parachute games and a drum circle.
East Commerce Solutions Inc., AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, the Pediatric Heart Center at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Gabrielle Dinsmore Heart and Hope Fund sponsored the event.
According to the association, congenital heart defects occur in eight out of every 1,000 births in the United States. Association funding for pediatric cardiac research, which in the past year approached $14.8 million, is second largest in the U.S., after the federal government. Most of the funding is applied to basic biomedical research, the association said.
