In this era of “People First,” judging the worth of a company is not just about its bottom line. It often has to do with the footprint it leaves in the community in which it exists and on those it employs. For Rhode Island’s Atrion Networking Corp., an IT services provider that designs, deploys and manages business-driven IT solutions, its footprint, then, is equal to that of a sasquatch.
In February, Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee granted official approval and signature for Atrion’s Internetworking Apprentice Program; the first program recognized in Rhode Island in an industry that hasn’t traditionally provided candidates with the hands-on learning experience that apprenticeships provide.
The program is not a surprise, given the company’s philosophy within the workplace.
“We have a vested interest in the success of our employees and helping them achieve their career and life goals,” said Patrick Halpin, Atrion’s talent recruiter. “We create an environment that provides our employees the opportunity to build equity in their careers.”
This they do by holding an annual thought-leadership symposium; engaging in major quarterly company meetings; facilitating employee-learning forums; and having CEO Tim Hebert personally delivering Atrion’s Core Training to new employees. The company’s success, it asserts, comes from the respect it has received throughout the state, acknowledging that where it is today would have never happened without its family of employees. •
