Friday’s salon takes its inspiration from one of the most important and most-viewed items in the Athenaeum's Special Collections, which will be part of an accompanying exhibit, “Zarafa: Spectacle of the Giraffe, 1826-1839,” opening Feb. 7.
John Tresch will lead a discussion on the evolution of science, society and spectacle in the cosmopolitan 19th century, based upon the giraffe who went to Paris in 1827. A gift for King Charles X from Muhammad Ali, the Pasha of Egypt, the giraffe created an unprecedented sensation among Parisians appearing in everything from philosophical essays to hat designs.
