A lively experiment in health care exchanges

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s nation-leading efforts to establish its own health insurance exchange, one of the key health are reform initiatives under the Affordable Care Act, has attracted the attention of Governing, a publication of e.Republic Inc., a new media company focused on the state and local government and education markets.

Rhode Island’s version, the R.I. Health Benefits Exchange, was established in September 2011 by executive order by Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee. In December 2011, Rhode Island received $58.5 million in federal funds to help design and implement the new exchange.

As a result, Governing said that it has “arranged with state officials to track the establishment of R.I.’s Health Benefits Exchange over the next year. The goal is to provide insight into what has worked for them, exploring how one state has overcome the challenges inherent to such an immense task.”
