A penny more at the pumps

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s gasoline prices are up this week, but only by a penny, according to AAA Southern New England.

The cost of self-serve, unleaded regular averaged $3.82 per gallon – 1 cent more than last week – according to the trade group’s weekly survey of Ocean State’s pump prices.

Prices ranged from $3.96 per gallon for midgrade unleaded to $4.09 for premium to $4.21 for diesel, but AAA found prices for regular unleaded as low as $3.75 and recommended consumers shop around for the best deal.

Even with the 1 cent increase, Rhode Island is 3 cents below the $3.85 national average for self-pump regular unleaded. A year ago, gas in the Ocean State cost $3.56 on average for a gallon of regular unleaded.

Gas prices in Massachusetts rose by 2 cents over the last week, to $3.74 per gallon for unleaded regular, negating the 2 cent reprieve Bay State residents enjoyed last week.

A year ago at this time, the Massachusetts average price for a gallon of gas was $3.48.
