PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices in Rhode Island and Massachusetts have fallen every week since early July, dropping 4 cents and 5 cents, respectively, according to AAA Northeast.

“The last time prices were this low, hardly anyone noticed, as we were in the middle of the record snowfalls of February,” Lloyd Albert, senior vice president of public and government affairs for AAA Northeast, said in a statement. “Motorists continue to benefit from strong supplies and lessening demand, with some local stations even approaching the $2 per gallon mark.”
AAA said this is the 12th consecutive week of declines in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
AAA Northeast’s survey of gasoline prices found that self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is averaging $2.22 per gallon in the Ocean State. Locally, prices are 17 cents lower than a month ago, and also are 8 cents less than the national average of $2.30. A year ago at this time, Rhode Island’s average price was $3.42.
Prices range from $2.04 to $2.35, with midgrade unleaded at $2.50; premium unleaded at $2.68; and diesel, $2.54.
In Massachusetts, self-serve, regular unleaded is averaging $2.15 per gallon; prices are 20 cents less than a month ago. A year ago, the Massachusetts average price was $3.39.
Prices in the Bay State range from $1.94 to $2.69, with midgrade unleaded at $2.48; premium unleaded, $2.67; and diesel, $2.55.
AAA offered the following fuel-saving tip of the week: Don’t top off a gas tank. Stop filling after the automatic nozzle shuts off the second time.
