PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices fell 3 cents in Rhode Island, and 2 cents in Massachusetts from last week, AAA Northeast said Monday.

In Rhode Island, self-serve, regular unleaded is averaging $2.18 per gallon, marking the first time prices have fallen below $2.20 since early February. Prices are 4 cents lower than a month ago, and the current price is 3 cents less than the national average for regular unleaded at $2.21. A year ago, Rhode Island’s average price was $3.16.

“Falling crude oil prices supported by build-ups in domestic inventory have contributed to the price of gasoline, both locally and nationally, continuing to move lower,” Lloyd Albert, senior vice president of public and government affairs for AAA Northeast, said in a statement. “The national average could fall below $2 before the end of the year for the first time since 2009.”

Prices range from $2.03 to $2.33, with midgrade unleaded at $2.54; premium unleaded at $2.69; and diesel, $2.50.
In Massachusetts, self-serve, regular unleaded is averaging $2.08 per gallon. The price is within a penny of the lowest price this year, AAA Northeast said.
Prices are 7 cents less than a month ago, and 13 cents less than the national average. A year ago, the Massachusetts average price was $3.10. Prices of other grades of gasoline are as follows: midgrade unleaded, $2.40; premium unleaded, $2.58; and diesel, $2.52.
AAA offered the following fuel-saving tip: Aggressive driving can lower a car’s fuel economy by up to 33 percent. Instead of making quick starts and sudden stops, go easy on both pedals. If there is a red light ahead, ease off the gas and coast up to it rather than waiting until the last second to brake.
