PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices in Rhode Island decreased 8 cents from last week, and fell 6 cents in Massachusetts, according to AAA Northeast.

AAA Northeast’s Aug. 11 survey of Rhode Island gasoline prices found that self-serve, regular unleaded is averaging $2.60 per gallon. Locally, prices are 16 cents lower than a month ago. Prices are a cent more than the national average at $2.59. A year ago at this time, Rhode Island’s average price was 99 cents higher at $3.59.

“Expectations that the global oil market will remain oversupplied, at least in the near term, are keeping downward pressure on the price of crude, translating into savings at the gas pumps,” Lloyd Albert, senior vice president of public and government affairs for AAA Northeast, said in a statement. “Add in the potential for demand to drop as the summer driving season winds down, and we may be seeing notable price declines heading into the Labor Day holiday.”

Prices range from $2.37 to $2.80. Prices of other grades of gasoline are as follows: Midgrade unleaded, $2.85; premium unleaded, $3; and diesel, $2.90.
In Massachusetts, self-serve, regular unleaded is averaging $2.53 per gallon. Prices locally are 20 cents less than a month ago. A year ago, the Massachusetts average price was 98 cents higher at $3.51.
Prices of other grades of gasoline are as follows: Midgrade unleaded, $2.82; premium unleaded, $3.02; and diesel, $2.84.
