PROVIDENCE – The price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline fell 1 cent in Rhode Island, and 2 cents in Massachusetts this week, matching lows last reached for both states in July 2004, AAA Northeast said Monday.
AAA said self-serve, regular unleaded is averaging $2.22 per gallon in the Ocean State, and Rhode Island’s price is 5 cents above the national average of $2.17.
A year ago at this time, the average price in Rhode Island was 50 cents higher at $2.72.
“We haven’t seen prices this low in late July since 2004,” Lloyd P. Albert, AAA Northeast’s senior vice president of public and government affairs, said in a statement. “The low prices are contributing to what looks to be a record summer travel season, with Americans flocking to the beaches, national parks and a wide variety of destinations.”
Prices for other grades of gasoline in Rhode Island are: $2.47, midgrade unleaded; $2.61, premium unleaded; and $2.36, diesel.
In Massachusetts, self-serve, regular unleaded is averaging $2.15 per gallon, 2 cents below the national average. A year ago at this time, the average price in Massachusetts was 50 cents higher at $2.65.
