AAA: Gas prices jump in R.I., Mass.

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices increased 4 cents in Rhode Island, and 3 cents in Massachusetts, from last week, according to AAA Northeast.
The May 26 survey of gasoline prices found that self-serve, regular unleaded is averaging $2.70 per gallon, an increase of 4 cents from last week in Rhode Island, representing the sixth week of increases. Locally, prices are 16 cents higher than a month ago, but 5 cents less than the national average for regular unleaded of $2.75. A year ago, Rhode Island’s average price was $3.71.
Prices range from $2.51 to $2.81. Prices for other gasoline grades are as follows: midgrade unleaded, $2.89; premium unleaded, $3.02; and diesel, $3.02.
In Massachusetts, self-serve, regular gasoline is averaging $2.67 per gallon, an increase of 3 cents from last week. Prices are 12 cents higher than a month ago, but 8 cents less than the national average for self-serve unleaded. A year ago, Massachusetts’ average price was $3.65.
Prices in Massachusetts range from $2.53 to $2.89. Prices of other grades of gasoline are as follows: midgrade unleaded, $2.87; $3, premium unleaded; and diesel, $3.03.
AAA offered the following fuel-saving tip: Keep track of gas mileage; if there is a decrease in fuel economy, a vehicle may not be operating at peak performance.

  1. Refiners are running out of room to store gasoline but the wholesale price has been steady at $2.00 a gallon for the last month or so.

    The coming OPEC meeting may cause a jump or fall depending on what the Saudis do. They do not want to lose market share.
