AAA: Gas prices rise again in R.I., Mass.

PROVIDENCE – For the second week in a row, gasoline prices increased in Rhode Island and Massachusetts after months of declines.

In Rhode Island, gasoline prices jumped 5 cents, while in Massachusetts, they rose 4 cents, according to AAA Northeast.

In the Ocean State, self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is averaging $2.25 per gallon, 5 cents higher than last week. Locally, prices are 9 cents higher than a month ago, and the current price is a penny less than the national average for regular unleaded at $2.26.

A year ago, Rhode Island’s average price was $3.49. Prices range from $2.17 to $2.39.

Other prices for different grades of gasoline are as follows: $2.47 for midgrade unleaded, $2.62 for premium unleaded and $2.92 for diesel.

In Massachusetts, self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is averaging $2.22 per gallon, 4 cents higher than last week and 6 cents higher than a month ago. The current price is 4 cents lower than the national average. A year ago, the Massachusetts average price was $3.45.

Massachusetts gasoline prices are as follows: $2.41 for midgrade unleaded, $2.54 for premium unleaded and $2.96 for diesel.

AAA said that as temperatures drop, so does air pressure in tires. To maximize fuel economy, check and adjust tire pressure once per month.
