PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices in Rhode Island inched up a penny from last week, but fell by the same amount in Massachusetts, AAA Northeast said.

Self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is averaging $2.15 per gallon in Rhode Island, the same price as a month ago, but 10 cents more than the national average for regular unleaded at $2.05. A year ago at this time, Rhode Island’s average price was 79 cents higher at $2.94.

Prices range from $2 to $2.27, with midgrade unleaded at $2.48; premium unleaded at $2.67; and diesel, $2.45.
In Massachusetts, self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is averaging $2.07 per gallon. Like in Rhode Island, the price is the same as it was last month. It is 2 cents more than the national average, and 79 cents less than it was a year ago.
Prices in Massachusetts for unleaded regular range from $1.93 to $2.40, with midgrade unleaded at $2.39; premium unleaded, $2.56; and diesel, $2.49.

“The lowest Thanksgiving gas prices in seven years helped spur plenty of holiday travel, and the downward trend at the pump continues on the heels of the long holiday weekend,” Mary Maguire, director of public and legislative affairs, said in a statement.
AAA offered the following fuel-saving tip: Accelerate smoothly and brake gradually. It’s safer, uses less gas and reduces brake wear.
