AAA: Gas prices continue to drop in R.I., Mass.

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices in the Ocean State are continuing to drop, falling another 3 cents from last week, according to AAA Southern New England’s weekly survey.

AAA found that self-serve, regular gasoline averaged $2.96 per gallon, and that prices locally are 20 cents lower than a month ago.

The current price remains 14 cents more than the national average for regular unleaded gasoline at $2.82, however. A year ago at this time, Rhode Island’s average price was 48 cents higher at $3.44.

Prices in Rhode Island range from $2.82 to $3.12. Average per-gallon prices for different grades of self-serve gas ranged from $3.22 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.38 for premium unleaded and $3.52 for diesel.

In Massachusetts, gasoline prices had an even larger drop, falling 6 cents from last week, AAA said.
In Massachusetts, self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline averaged $2.88 per gallon. Locally, prices are 22 cents lower than last month, but 6 cents more than the national average.

A year ago, the Massachusetts average price was 48 cents higher at $3.36.
“This additional 6-cent drop in prices at the pump is more welcome news for holiday travelers. Nationally, prices for regular unleaded are down almost 90 cents since May,” Mary Maguire, AAA Southern New England Director of Public and Legislative Affairs, said in a statement.
Prices in Massachusetts range from $2.71 to $3.39. Average per-gallon prices for different grades of self-serve gas ranged from $3.18 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.33 for premium unleaded and $3.52 for diesel.

AAA offered the following tip: “Slow down. The faster a vehicle travels, the more fuel it burns.”
