AHA recognizes R.I. firms

PROVIDENCE – The American Heart Association recognized several Rhode Island employers recently for promoting physical activity and health in the workplace.
The AHA’s “Fit Friendly Worksite” program is part of its national healthy living initiative, “My Heart. My Life,” which offers a simple solutions that focus on improving nutrition, physical activity and children’s health.
Gold level organizations recognized for the November 2014 deadline included: Banneker Industries, Brown University, Cranston High School West, GTECH Corporation, Hasbro, Inc., Hope Global, and Lifespan/Lifespan Corporate Services.
The AHA program helps businesses improve employee wellness and morale, while lowering health care costs. Organizations reach Fit Friendly gold-level status by implementing various activities and programs to encourage physical activity, nutrition and culture enhancements.
Amica was identified as a platinum-level organization. Companies achieve this recognition – the highest tier – by measuring the outcomes of their wellness efforts such as employee behavior change or costs savings.
AHA also honored Brown University with the Worksite Innovation Award for spearheading development and implementation of an innovative and effective program that promotes wellness, specifically in the workplace.
Applying for the program is free and, if denied, a firm will receive useful tips and tools from the AHA on how to improve workplace wellness programs in order to reapply. Applications are reviewed twice per year and the next deadline is April 1.
