PROVIDENCE – AT&T and Verizon Wireless have tied for overall performance in Providence for the second year in a row, according to the latest report by Seattle mobile research and testing organization RootMetrics.

RootMetrics measures network reliability and speed, as well as overall voice, data and text performance to determine the best network in more than 125 cities nationwide.

While AT&T and Verizon tied in the RootMetrics test of reliability for Providence last year, this time AT&T pulled ahead slightly to claim the No. 1 in that test while Verizon placed second. Sprint ranked third and T-Mobile ranked fourth. The reliability test includes email success rate, call failures, text delivery within 10 seconds and send failure rate.

AT&T also outperformed Verizon in terms of data performance, but the two tied in the RootMetrics voice performance evaluation. Text performance saw a tie between T-Mobile and AT&T, while Verizon fell to third in that test and Sprint ranked fourth.

In the speed evaluation – gauging average Web and app performance, average download speed, average time to download 10 emails and average upload speed – T-Mobile climbed ahead of both AT&T and Verizon to win the top place, with AT&T and Verizon tied for second place and Sprint coming in last. Last year, AT&T topped in the speed index.

RootMetrics noted that both Sprint and T-Mobile launched LTE service in Providence since the last time the test was conducted, in July 2013.

T-Mobile ranked third overall in the RootMetrics report, below AT&T and Verizon, while Sprint ranked last. RootMetrics testers drove 1,164 miles to 32 different indoor locations around Rhode Island to conduct the test in April and May.
