A strong sense of flexibility and a willingness to reach out to under-served markets have been keys to success for Altus Dental Insurance Co.

The Providence-based company is consistently seeing a net growth of 10,000 to 12,000 new members a year, according to Joe Perroni, vice president of sales.

Altus, which was founded in 2001, specifically has its sights set on Massachusetts, where it reaches members through partnerships with Health New England, Tufts Health Plan and AAA Northeast. Perroni called the latter partnership particularly unique, as Altus is the exclusive dental offering for AAA in Massachusetts, where the motor club has many members.

“The endorsement from a company like AAA has been unbelievably powerful for us,” said Perroni.

Specifically, it’s allowed Altus to reach otherwise under-served populations – retirees, for example, sole proprietors, or those who work part time and don’t get dental benefits.

Meanwhile, the company is the largest Preferred Provider Organization in Massachusetts, with 60 percent of dentists in the state participating. It also provides services to 100 of Massachusetts’ 351 cities and towns.

Perroni cited among Altus’ strengths its ability to offer deep discounts as well as unique, modern, flexible plans that the marketplace hasn’t seen in the past.

“We look at different opportunities where we can place the business,” he said. •
