Ackerman introduces tax incentive for wellness

PROVIDENCE – Rep. Mia A. Ackerman, D-Cumberland, has introduced a bill on behalf of Lt. Gov. Elizabeth H. Roberts that would create a tax credit for small employers that implement a wellness program for employees.
The program would be subject to standards set by the R.I. Department of Health.
The wellness credit would equal 25 percent of the costs associated with implementing the program, with the maximum credit of $10,000 per business in any tax year. The program would become available on Jan. 1. According to a news release, the Smaller Business Association of New England is among the supporters of the bill.
Ackerman said that while many large companies and public entities have the means to offer wellness opportunities, small businesses have a tougher time offering incentives.
Other states, such as Massachusetts and Indiana, have begun tackling the issue with similar proposals and programs, she said. •
