BOSTON – A group has formed aiming to repeal the new law that legalizes casino gambling in Massachusetts, according to The Republican.

The Repeal the Casino Deal’s leader John Ribeiro, of Winthrop, Mass., said 10 voters filed a petition with the secretary of state to place a referendum on the ballot in November of next year to strike down the law to legalize casinos, the publication reported.

The secretary of state then sent the petition to the Attorney General Martha M. Coakley to see if the casino law is exempt from a possible referendum to repeal.

According to the Massachusetts Constitution laws related to state appropriations cannot be repealed by referendum and the casino law appropriates money to start a division of gaming law enforcement and for negotiating a possible agreement with a casino with a federally recognized Native American tribe.

If approved by the attorney general, the group will have 90 days to collect 34,456 signatures of registered voters, The Republican reported.
