Richard Beretta recently received the Michael Wiggins Leadership Award from Friends Way and the Light of Hope Philanthropy Award from Gateway Healthcare, for his extensive involvement with both organizations. He is a shareholder at Adler Pollock & Sheehan P.C., where he defends both insured and self-insured clients in many different fields. Beretta has been selected as a Rhode Island “Super Lawyer” in 2013, among several other recognitions. When he is not defending a client, Beretta volunteers his time by serving on numerous boards and committees, such as Trinity Repertory Company and St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation.

PBN: Could you describe some of work you have done for Gateway Healthcare and Friends Way?
BERETTA: As a board member of the Gateway Healthcare Foundation, and a supporter of Friends Way, I try to provide both support and advocacy for these wonderful organizations. As Rhode Island’s only bereavement center for families that relies solely on philanthropy, Friends Way is at the forefront of providing valuable services on-site and in the community. Adler Pollock & Sheehan has been active in supporting Friends Way’s fundraising events. Some of our younger attorneys hosted a basketball-league fundraiser where proceeds benefited Friends Way. My service to Gateway Healthcare and its affiliates is an important part of my work at Adler Pollock & Sheehan. Our firm is grateful to the Rhode Island community for having confidence in us. The firm’s commitment to charitable causes is our way of expressing that gratitude.

PBN: Why did you initially choose to join the board for Gateway Healthcare?
BERETTA: I decided to join the board in 1993 after learning about the broad scope of Gateway’s (then Community Counseling Center) care. As the largest provider of behavioral health care in Rhode Island, Gateway offers an array of services. Together, with its affiliate nonprofits, including Friends Way, more than 25,000 people throughout the state benefit from their mental health expertise. I am fortunate to work with Gateway and its leadership team through the foundation in enhancing service delivery and leveraging opportunities for programmatic growth by increasing the profile of Gateway in the community.

PBN: Do you serve on any other boards in Rhode Island? If so, what are they and why did you choose to join them?
BERETTA: I serve on the Board of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce, Trinity Repertory Company and St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, as well as a member of numerous committees for specific fundraising events for a variety of charities. We encourage all of our attorneys to give back to the communities where we live and work through active volunteer involvement. Most of our attorneys are actively involved on the boards or in leadership positions of professional, charitable and civic organizations. Even our youngest people understand that a career at Adler Pollock & Sheehan includes making our state a better place to live for Rhode Islanders facing all types of challenges in their everyday lives. •
