Patricia K. Rocha, a shareholder at Adler Pollock and Sheehan P.C., was recently named 2012 commercial litigator of the year by Finance Monthly Magazine. Now in its third year, the Finance Monthly Law Awards recognize law firms and legal professionals who have outperformed their peers through dedication to client service and work undertaken. At her firm, Rocha serves as chair of the litigation group. She is a co-author of a national text on trial advocacy and has also written articles and lectured on various aspects of the law. Rocha holds a J.D. from Boston College.
PBN: How long have you practiced in the commercial litigation area and what do you think sets you apart from your competition?
ROCHA: I have practiced in the commercial litigation area since I was admitted to the bar in 1982. I do not know if this sets me apart from my competition, but I hope my clients find that I bring intelligence, experience and professionalism to protect their interests in the commercial-litigation area. I try to work with my clients to achieve the best resolution in the most cost-effective manner. … Finally, I think the breadth of experience that I offer to my clients outside of the commercial-litigation area, including health care, employment litigation and white-collar criminal defense, is a real asset for our clients.
PBN: What do you find most fulfilling about your work?
ROCHA: What I find most fulfilling about my work is getting to know my clients and their areas of business. It’s fun to become a mini expert in their area of the world ... I try to focus early on with my clients, as well as with opposing counsel, on the real issues of the case to see if some form of early-settlement resolution, for example, mediation, makes sense. Working with my clients and seeing them return to their business after a successful litigation matter is always a happy day. In addition, I have been fortunate to form long-lasting friendships with many of my clients.
PBN: Any tips for those looking to improve client care or step up their game at work?
ROCHA: My biggest tip is to give attention, attention and more attention to your clients. While all clients understand that they are not your only client, they still want to be No. 1. I always try to get back to clients on the same day even if it is a message that I am tied up and will get back to them with a substantive response at a later date. n
