Advocates mostly pleased with 6-10 redesign plan

PROVIDENCE – The new redesign plan for remaking the Route 6-10 Connector in Providence was unveiled Dec. 8.

Officials say the plan will reduce the scale of the interchange of what now includes nine bridges, to seven bridges, physically reconnect several neighborhoods and remove vehicle traffic from Olneyville Square.

The new design features a direct connection between Route 10 North and Route 6 West, new pedestrian and bicycle routes and a revamp of the Huntingdon Viaduct.

The state initially proposed a replacement of the existing corridor of bridges and highways. The city initially wanted a corridor with multiple new exits into and connections among the neighborhoods.

Several activists and Providence nonprofit leaders said they were relieved a simple rebuild of the existing connector was not going to happen, arguing the design unfairly isolates the city’s impoverished neighborhoods. •
