Affordable housing boosts health

In November’s election, Rhode Islanders will have the opportunity to make important improvements to our health care system and the outcomes it produces; they can do this by voting yes on Ballot Question 7 and investing in affordable housing in Rhode Island.

Housing is deeply intertwined with health care. Research shows providing safe, stable and affordable housing can result in significant long-term health care savings. Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island recognizes this cascading impact and we have dedicated specialists who work to connect our members with housing when they find themselves in need.

Poor quality, inconsistent or outright lack of housing can contribute to greater risk of injury, increased exposure to environmental toxins and poor access to health care services. Inadequate housing often drives individuals to use more expensive services found in emergency rooms and hospitals.

A growing body of evidence shows that investments in housing are a good way to improve the health of a population and reduce overall health care costs. For example, a recently released Center for Outcomes Research and Education study on the value of stable, affordable housing points to an average 12 percent reduction in Medicaid costs for individuals after they moved into housing, with the best gains for individuals in housing that has on-site health, social and/or wellness services. However, the challenge our staff finds in Rhode Island is there is simply not enough supply of quality, affordable housing to meet the needs.

I urge Rhode Islanders to consider the benefits of investing in affordable housing in our state. This is an issue that is best addressed when we work together and by supporting “Yes on Seven.” With your vote, you can help build housing capacity and bring greater safety, health and stability to our communities. •
