CRANSTON – Nicki M. Maher, vice president of Alex and Ani | Charity by Design, has been named the March of Dimes Rhode Island 2015 Citizen of the Year.
A recent mother, Maher will be honored at a fundraising reception at Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyards in Little Compton on Sept. 13.

Maher was chosen as this year’s recipient by the March of Dimes Citizen of the Year Advisory Committee, which is co-chaired by Guy Abelson of Lifespan and Carolyn Belisle of Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island.

Each year a community leader is selected for this honor, based on interest and support of the March of Dimes and its mission to improve the health of all babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

“March of Dimes is delighted, together with [Alex and Ani] Founder, CEO and Creative Director Carolyn Rafaelian, to recognize Maher’s achievements. Her passion, talent and ability to energize and positively impact the philanthropic landscape, both in Rhode Island and throughout the United States is in evidence each and every day,” according to a news release from the March of Dimes.

Last year, the March of Dimes Foundation and Alex and Ani | Charity by Design entered into a partnership and launched “Special Delivery” charm bangles through which the foundation has received more than $250,000 – money which directly supports life-saving research, community service and advocacy for maternal child health both in Rhode Island and throughout the country. Alex and Ani said it would donate 20 percent of the purchase price from the Special Delivery bangles to the March of Dimes through March 2015.
