CRANSTON – Starting in the spring, jewelry maker Alex and Ani will join 13 other companies in southern New England offering Roger Williams University School of Law students legal experience as part of a new externship program.
Students will have the opportunity to receive academic credit while training in Alex and Ani’s in-house corporate law department as part of the school’s Corporate Counsel Clinical Externship Program.
Other companies participating include CVS Health, GTECH, Textron, IDC/Newport Experience, Fenway Sports Group, The Kraft Group, Care New England, Schneider Electric and Moran Shipping Agencies.
“Learning to think critically and how to apply the law in corporate situations that aren’t spelled out in a textbook are invaluable experiences for soon-to-be members of the bar,” Suzanne Kelly, general counsel to Alex and Ani, said in a statement. “As a company that is committed to building a culture that focuses on mindful actions, we are pleased to team with RWU Law to help support the next generation of legal professionals in the Ocean State.”
One student per semester will be selected by RWU Law for the legal externship position at Alex and Ani. Student applicants will be subjected to the formal Alex and Ani hiring process. As part of that process the student will learn about expectations for the position, as well as the company’s code of conduct and core values – just like interns and employees in other departments at the company.
“Educating the next generation of lawyers is our mission, and we are thrilled to join with Alex and Ani in offering this invaluable training program with a company that shares our core values of promoting positive experiences,” RWU Law Dean Michael J. Yelnosky said.
“By partnering with local corporate leaders, we are able to offer our students hands-on experiential learning programs that will prepare them as future legal leaders in our state and beyond,” he said.
