CHICAGO – Rhode Island ranked at the middle of the pack on the Allied Van Lines 2013 ranking of the U.S. states in terms of net inbound/outbound migration, calculated as the difference between inbound and outbound moves performed by Allied Van Lines over the year.

Established in 1928, Allied Van Lines operates more than 400 locations in North America and is one of the world’s largest moving companies.

Allied Van Lines performed 155 inbound moves into Rhode Island in 2013 and 157 outbound moves, giving the Ocean State a net outbound migration of two Allied Van Lines moves. Rhode Island ranked at No. 26, where No. 1 represents the largest net inbound migration and No. 50 represents the largest net outbound migration.

Massachusetts – with 1,302 inbound moves and 1,255 outbound moves – ranked at No. 20, with a net inbound migration of 47, an improvement on its No. 36 ranking, with net outbound migration in 2012. The company did not report the 2012 ranking for Rhode Island.

Other New England states that reported a net inbound migration in 2013 included Vermont (No. 17) with 61 net inbound moves and New Hampshire (No. 18) with 52 net inbound moves.

Maine (No. 30) had a net outbound migration of 34, while Connecticut (No. 42) had a net outbound migration of 287.

The states with the largest net inbound migration in 2013 were Texas with 1,914 net inbound moves, Florida with 1,115 net inbound moves and Arizona with 512 net inbound moves.

The states with the largest net outbound migration in 2013 were New York with 975 outbound moves, Illinois with 926 outbound moves and Pennsylvania with 898 outbound moves.

The Allied Van Lines ranking included Washington, D.C., but did not include Hawaii.

The report followed news Monday that Rhode Island’s estimated population increased for the first time since 2004. The U.S. Census Bureau reported that the Ocean State’s population totaled 1,051,511 as of July 1 this year, up from 1,050,304 as of July 1, 2012.
