Amtrak ridership drops in the Northeast

WASHINGTON – Ridership on Amtrak’s Northeast corridor trains declined 1.2 percent in the six months from October to March compared with the same period the previous year, the railroad said Tuesday.
Service disruptions caused by Hurricane Sandy played a role in the regional ridership drop and nationally Amtrak ridership grew 0.9 percent year over year during the first half of the federal fiscal year.
In the Northeast corridor, Acela train ridership dropped 3.4 percent, from 1.67 million people in the first half of fiscal 2012 to 1.62 million in the six months ending in March.
Conventional Northeast regional service was basically flat over the six month period, down 0.1 percent, from 3.864 million people to 3.859 million.

In March, Acela ridership declined 2.5 percent compared with March 2012, while conventional regional ridership rose 1.9 percent year over year.

The 2.8 million people who rode Amtrak nationally in March were a record for that month and represented a 1.9 percent increase from last March.
