PROVIDENCE – The Apeiron Institute for Sustainable Living will host the 2012 Sustainable Schools Summit on Friday, Nov. 2, at Rhode Island College.

The event, now in its fifth year, will showcase successful local initiatives and provide participants with the knowledge to move schools toward greater sustainability.

The program is free but registration is required at www.apeiron.org.

With welcoming remarks from U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, the event will bring together teachers, students, parents, administrations, facilities managers and other members of school committees across Rhode Island.

The event, taking place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at RIC’s student union, also includes remarks from Acting Commissioner of Education David Abbott and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region One Administrator Curt Spalding. The keynote address will be provided by R.I. Office of Energy Resources Administrator Marion Gold.

Event participants will have the opportunity to attend hands-on workshops including “Sustainability through Stories” and “Resources for Teaching Climate Change.”

Friday’s event will close with a networking lunch and a film presentation providing a virtual tour of Rhode Island’s new materials recycling facility in Johnston.

The summit is made possible through a partnership with the R.I. Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Rhode Island College, Aramark, Hasbro, National Grid and the Office of Energy Resources.
