Appreciation is just desserts

Let them eat cake. Well, if they want to, that is.

Named one of the Best Places To Work for 2012, Cornerstone Group in Warwick gets the nod for the little and not-so-little things it does for employees, and everything in between. One little thing is cake for employee birthdays and company anniversaries, and summer and holiday parties. One thing in between could be the flexibility offered to workers when they need to get to medical appointments or their children’s school events. A biggie, most certainly, is the company paying 100 percent of the premium for employee long-term-care insurance, long- and short-term disability insurance, and full dental coverage.

“This is a very fast-paced organization – there are multiple companies within one,” said nine-year receptionist Jane Phenix. “Everyone works hard and they never, ever take you for granted. They let you know when you’ve done a good job.”

The company, founded in 1993, is a leading benefits-advisory firm, serving more than 1,500 employers nationwide, helping companies find potential growth or program-development areas.

Some of the other benefits listed by survey respondents at the company that make it a Best Place To Work include lactation facilities for breastfeeding mothers and after one year of hire, eligibility to contribute to a 401(k).

“They’re appreciative for all you do,” Phenix said. “And in return, they do so much for us; they know the good employees and compensate us in many ways.”

Which, from time to time, includes a little cake. •
