FREETOWN – Members of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay-Head Aquinnah and Freetown town officials have indentified a potential casino resort spot on 400 acres of land off Route 140, according to The Herald News.

Details on the potential site were revealed Thursday, three days after the Board of Selectmen scheduled a May 29 referendum for residents to vote on the casino project.

β€œIt’s an exciting project for Freetown and the Aquinnah and we have a basis for a good partnership going forward,” Town Administrator Richard Brown told the newspaper.

The tribe has discussed potential casino sites in Lakeville and Fall River, but Freetown is the first to schedule a vote.

The Aquinnah tribe submitted a bid for a casino under the newly passed Massachusetts gambling legislation, which gives federally recognized Native American tribes the first crack at a casino license in the Bay State.
