This Week's Poll

Are Brown, Johnson & Wales and Lifespan contributing a large enough sum to Providence in lieu of taxes?

Posted 5/6/12

With the announcements last week that Brown University would increase its contribution to Providence in lieu of taxes by $31.5 million over 11 years, in addition to Lifespan committing to $2.4 million over three years, the city is getting closer to filling its budget deficit.

However, despite Johnson & Wales University also increasing its payments to the city, there are still two universities and two hospital systems that are on Mayor Angel Taveras’ list of calls to make for increased giving to the municipal coffers.

Are the mayor and the city nonprofits on the right path to help solve the municipal deficits that have been caused by skyrocketing pension and medical benefit obligations?
