Are the health insurance rate hike requests justified?

By PBN Staff

The latest requests for rate hikes by the state’s health insurers – Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, UnitedHealthcare of New England and Tufts Health Plan – have been rejected by the Health Insurance Commissioner.

The insurers are not backing down, arguing that they are just being financially prudent.

Oh, that it were just this simple...but of course it's not. To some extent of course the rate filings reflect legitimate cost inflation, which indicates the dire need for fundamental reform of the whole healthcare system, starting with the financing mechanisms. Fighting with the insurers over their rates is just a distraction from this important work that must get started now. Broad coalitions like HealthRIght are the essential energy behind this effort and should be supported by all seeking lasting relief. Wednesday, July 1, 2009|Report this
