WEST WARWICK – Astro-Med Inc. has changed its name to AstroNova to reflect its traditional strengths in the aerospace business, as well as its growth in new areas.
The manufacturer of technology for the specialty printing, test and measurement markets announced the name change on Friday.
President and CEO Gregory A. Woods said the new name fits the company’s strategy well, as “astro” references its roots in the aerospace business and “nova” comes from the Latin word “novus,” meaning new.

Woods, in a phone interview, said the company started thinking about the name change 2 ½ years ago when it divested the medical business.
They kept having to tell customers that they were not involved in medical products anymore, despite the Astro-Med name. As they were putting together a future growth plan, they decided that it was time for a new name, marking the new chapter in the company’s history and its new direction, he explained.

“As we developed our plans to modernize the company and transform it into a business that could deliver double-digit annual growth, it became clear a new name would be essential to effectively communicate our strategy. … Our new brand emphasizes our traditional strengths in aerospace, along with our expanding presence in test & measurement, product identification and other new areas where we can apply our data-visualization technology,” Woods said.
“We believe the new AstroNova brand will unify our organization, and provide an exciting opportunity to communicate our company’s potential for innovation and growth,” he added.
Astro-Med’s products and test & measurement businesses will adopt the AstroNova brand. QuickLabel Systems products will continue to go to market under the QuickLabel brand, but will have a new logo and brand colors.
Each product line, which previously had its own website, has been incorporated into the revamped AstroNova website, www.astronovainc.com, Woods said.

The company employs approximately 350, and is hiring about a dozen more positions. Woods said AstroNova is expanding, and recently went to three production shifts for the first time in its 46-year history.
The company said it has filed for trademark protection of the AstroNova name and logo in the United States and other countries.
The company’s shares will continue to trade on the NASDAQ stock exchange under Astro-Med Inc., using the ticker symbol ALOT.
