Audubon Society looks to save raptors

EAST PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Audubon Society will host a shindig, devoting all proceeds to supporting raptor-preservation programs and other avian conservation efforts.

Dubbed a “Party for the Peregrines,” Audubon beckons conservation-conscious guests to on April 20 at the Squantum Club in East Providence from 6:30 to 9 p.m. This open-to-the-public, dress casual event is $50 per person. Purchase tickets and other information at

“The Peregrine Falcon is a true success story, coming back from the brink of extinction,” Audubon said in a release. A falcon couple has called Providence’s “Superman Building” on Westminster Street their roost for the last ten years, the group says, fledging their chicks atop the skyscraper nesting season.

Funds raised will go to ensure the vitality of peregrine-centered conservation programs like the Audubon Raptor Care and Rescue Programs, Raptors in Schools, the Providence Peregrine Webcam and Raptor Weekend, while also helping to protect “thousands of acres of valuable habitat” for Peregrines and other creatures.

Peregrine Falcons, also known as duck hawks, are the fastest animals on the planet, able to reach speeds of over more than miles per hour in a dive.
