Author selects winners writing contest

Three local students were recently awarded monetary prizes for submitting the top entries in the Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation’s ninth annual writing contest. An award ceremony, emceed by television reporter, WPRO radio anchor and children’s book author, was held at the Warwick Mall.

“After our daughter Katie died at the hands of a drunken driver, we wanted to find a way to carry on her legacy and keep her spirit alive,” said Meg DeCubellis. “As the years progressed we were fortunate enough to receive an outpouring of support and the writing contest is one way for us to give back to others and also raise awareness on important topics.”

This year’s writing context asked students to write about the impact of an economic crisis on families, social pressure and decision making. New York Times bestselling author Ann Hood served as the judge for this year’s contest.

“It is a tremendous honor that such an accomplished and acclaimed writer is willing to take time to give back to her community and support other aspiring writers, while at the same time raising awareness about the KDMF and its efforts, ” says John DeCubellis, executive director of the Katie DeCubelis Memorial Foundation.

Ethan Wright, of Narragansett, was named the first-place winner; Emily Fisher, of Coventry, took second place; and Jessica Malone, of Smithfield, was awarded third place.
