Autism expert to give talk

PROVIDENCE – Yale’s Fred Volkmar, one of the foremost national experts on autism will give a talk at 9 am on Thursday, Jan. 16, at Child and Family, 1268 Eddy Street, Providence.

Volkmar, who authored the DSM-IV chapter on autism and is chief of child psychiatry at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital, is upbeat about how much has been learned about autism but says more remains to be done.

“Our understanding of autism as a disorder has increased substantially over the last decade,” he said in an e-mail, “and our intervention methods have grown more sophisticated. This has likely been reflected in a gradual but important improvement in outcome. That said, we need more work on supporting adolescents and adults particularly relative to aging where there is essentially almost no work at all.”

There is a $25 fee to attend the event and reservations are required. Anyone interested should contact Michael Breton at mbreton@childandfamilyri.com.
