BBJ: Mass. casino votes reveal industry winners and losers

Posted:

BOSTON – The votes against allowing casinos in two Massachusetts towns reveal clear winners and losers as they shed light on the continuing expansion of gambling in the Bay State, according to the Boston Business Journal.

Voters in both East Boston and Palmer rejected plans that would have allowed casino resorts to be placed there. At the same time, voters in Revere approved plans by Suffolk Downs to build a casino there.

Two entities declared winners by BBJ as a result of the Palmer rejection were MGM Resorts International and Foxwoods. MGM and Springfield seem to be in the clear to build the one licensed casino in western Massachusetts now, and Foxwoods is looking to build a casino in Milford. The East Boston vote also helps Foxwoods’ plans, said the newspaper.

Among the losers of the votes was the region’s thoroughbred industry. With Suffolk Downs’ plan to build a casino at its race track rejected, it is possible that the track will have to shut down, said BBJ.
