BOSTON – Two Rhode Island wastewater treatment plants were recently recognized by the federal Environmental Protection Agency with 2014 Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant Excellence Awards.

The New Shoreham Water and Sewer Commission, which manages the Block Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, and the East Providence Water Pollution Control Plant were among several facilities in New England recognized for exemplary performance during 2014.
Also recognized were wastewater treatment plants in Medfield, Mass., and Hampton, N.H.
“The professionals operating these wastewater treatment plants, as well as the municipalities and the state environmental agencies that support them, are essential to keeping our environment healthy by protecting water quality. I am proud to give them the credit they deserve,” Curt Spalding, regional administrator of EPA’s New England office, said in a statement.
The EPA Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant Excellence Award was established to recognize and honor the employees of publicly owned wastewater treatment plants for their commitment to improving water quality with outstanding plant operations and maintenance.
Awards were given Jan. 28 at the annual New England Water Environment Association Conference in Boston. The R.I. Department of Environmental Management nominated the facilities for the award.
In other news, the Newport Water Pollution Control Plant was recently selected by EPA for a 2014 Regional Industrial Pretreatment Program Excellence Award. The same award was given to water pollution control facilities in East Providence and Attleboro, Mass.
Staff at the facilities were recognized by EPA’s New England office for exceptional work in inspecting, permitting and sampling its industrial users that discharge industrial waste into the city’s collection system. Newport and East Providence each had exceptional compliance records during recent state audits, the EPA said.
The Hanover Water Reclamation Facility in Hanover, N.H., received the same award.
