BLS highlights New England exports in new report

PROVIDENCE – The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has issued a new publication highlighting New England’s top exports, showing that prices for the region’s top export industry, computer and electronics product manufacturing, decreased 0.6 percent between May and August, due to competition and technological advances.
The report also discussed 2013’s results, stating that exports for New England surpassed $56.4 billion in 2013.
Last year, New England accounted for 6.3 percent of all U.S. exports of computer and electronics products, with Massachusetts alone accounting for 3.5 percent.
New England ranked fourth nationally in exports of computer and electronic products, behind Texas, California and Florida. It exported $12.9 billion in computer and electronic products in 2013 – 6.3 percent of total U.S. exports. Rhode Island accounted for $182 million of that total.
All six New England states accounted for 3.7 percent of total U.S. exports of transportation equipment in 2013. And New England’s nonelectrical machinery exports accounted for 3.9 percent of the nation’s total last year.
New England’s top six export industries in order are: computer and electronic products, transportation equipment, machinery (except electrical), chemicals, miscellaneous manufactured commodities and primary metal manufacturing.
