PROVIDENCE – The Blackstone Valley Tourism Council earlier this week announced the eight individuals and organizations that it will fete at its 28th annual awards dinner, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 3, at Twin River in Lincoln.

In addition to shining a spotlight on the honorees, the tourism council is celebrating two decades of operating river cruises with the Blackstone Valley Explorer, which takes more than 25,000 passengers every year up and down the Blackstone River, interpreting the region’s cultural and natural heritage.

Set to be honored with the Excellence in Arts and Business Award for his key role in coordinating the Pawtucket Arts Festival is Herb Weiss, the economic & cultural affairs officer for Pawtucket.

In addition, two individuals are to be inducted into the Rev. William Blackstone Society:

  • Daryl Sherman, noted jazz and cabaret singer/pianist and Woonsocket native, who will also perform at the awards event.

  • Michael Hebert, the supervising historic preservation specialist & archaeologist for the R.I. Department of Transportation.

Other awards to be given at the event include:

  • The Footprints in History Award, to the Stillwater Mill Complex in Harrisville, a mixed-use redevelopment of an abandoned mill that includes the Jesse M. Smith Memorial Library.

  • The Blackstone Valley Distinction in Business Award, to be given to Central Falls Provisions, a third-generation sausage-maker.

  • Arista Prizes, given to organizations that have made a commitment to sustainable tourism development in the state, region and nation. Winners are:

Blackstone River Theatre, in Cumberland, with the Rhode Island Prize; Catania Hospitality Group, Cape Cod, with the New England Prize; Alex and Ani LLC, Cranston, with the National Prize.
