Bank Rhode Island has awarded a $1,500 grant to New Urban Arts to support their two nationally recognized programs, Summer Inquiry and Mentorship in the Arts.
Half of the students enrolled in New Urban Arts’ mentorship program live in neighborhoods where the family poverty rate is 37.5 percent, which is more than twice the national average of 15 percent, according to the 2012 Census.
The mentorship program exposes students to the process of exhibiting, as well as working mediums such as sculpture, screen-printing and photography. Students also receive college advising through a partnership with College Visions.
The Summer Art Inquiry is a rigorous internship program that partners 30 students with four artists throughout July and August to explore an artistic area of interest in-depth.
New Urban Arts has received recognition from several statewide and national organizations, including the U.S. Department of Education and the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. •
